‘cherry on top’ giveaway

the yarnit

is doing a giveaway for mother’s day

and part of the prize is a copy of my new book ‘artistic differences’.

as a bonus, enough of classic elite yarns villa

is included for you to

knit up a pair of ‘silve’ fingerless gloves.

would you knit them for your mother? grandma? an aunt? a role model?

maybe even yourself?IMG_0439cropbrifor more info on how to enter

check out their facebook page here.

they’re saying new ways will be posted to enter

each day this week, so it might be worth going back to enter again.

can’t hurt, right?

someone,

perhaps a parent,

who designed the playground equipment at the bridge center,

put this great 3d swirl in the cement of the stairsIMG_0108briright where i was staring as i watched my child walking up.

if i had been alone, i would have climbed the steps

looking up

and missed it altogether.

perspective and the priority of our moments

accounts for so very much of how we see the world.

experimentalization

the science of the weekend

was twofold. the first trial was chemical:

can warm hardboiled egg in a confined space

really re-tarnish my necklace to its original aged glory

after the jeweler’s free post-repair cleaning?

results, a little tarnish formed, but there’s still a long way to go.IMG_9173cropthe second trial was more psychological:

if i bring my yarn filled yarnit to the new playground

is it up to the rough and tumble of

chasing after 3 or 4 kids?

result:

although the yarnit fared well,

the mama (that’s me) should have known betterIMG_0298cropthan to think that any knitting would be accomplished at all

during a first visit to a new playground.

lessons learned.

yarn that almost got cast on at the playground is artesano yarns hand painted alpaca.

colorway shown is ‘meadow flowers‘.

it’s the little things

i read ahead when i’m knitting someone else’s pattern.

when i’m writing up a new pattern, i plan ahead.

still, my tendency is to get in the groove of

the ribbing, or the stockinette,

and to blow right by

the place where i’m supposed to increase, or cable, or work an edging.

the only way i’ve found to stop myself is this:

i use stitch markers as ‘stop’ signs,

to me a stitch marker means stop, look, read and follow

the directions before proceeding.

problem is i lose stitch markers like other people

lose sunglasses or second mittens.

to compound the matter,

anything dangling off of a stitch marker

plain old annoys me.  also,

i like double stitch markers at the beginning of the round

so anything too thick is not to my liking either.

i guess i’m fussy, but i know what i want.lifesaversenter nice & knit’s new life savers.

these are my ideal.

streamlined silver rings, narrow enough to be doubled up,

and as an added bonus they come in small and large sizes

(you know how much i love the heavier yarns

and bigger needles).

i just cast on this week for a new cardi

and used these stitch markers.

they glide along so that i hardly know they’re there,

but they’re substantial enough that i

don’t forget to stop.

summary: they make me happy,

so now i’m headed off with them to knit a little more.

rainy morning

spring has sprung,

which always calls for rain.

growing things are thirsty things.

stuck inside, i hunkered down with my new prism pencils

to sketch out some color ideas…and then some more.

i’ve always drawn in just black and white,

so i get a happy little rush having choices of colors now.

IMG_0058brii mean, how much fun is it to have all

the right pencil colors for rowan’s cotton glace?

so. much. fun.

in an instant (or two)

this week

i joined instagram.

i am such a visual person

and that format is really invigorating and inspiring to me.

also it is challenging because it pushes me to find

pics to take that feel meaningful in some way in my days.

i posted once a day over there

and for at least this week i wanted to sort of summarize

visually, by reposting pics here, too.

(note: these are mostly alternate angles of the original shots,

so even if you did see them on instagram, this will be somewhat new.

what do you think?

would you like to see me post a weekly summary a pic a day?

or would you rather just go find me on instagram?

trumed

it looks like steve the may

has a bit of swatching fever (always a good thing for a designer).

i feel pretty honored that his goal is to make

a pair of my trume socks.Photo on 4-2-15 at 16.06brican’t wait to see what color he lands on

and if he loves them as much as i love the pink ones

that i wore this past saturday

to the book signing at the hub mills store.

nothing, in my opinion, makes high heeled mary janes

feel better than cushy

boot socks.

perfect fit

is it my birthday?  nope.

a holiday that involves gift giving?  nah.

nonetheless, my friend renee surprised me with a treat.

she got me my own knitter’s tool tin (emblazoned with my own name).

now i know these are built to travel

and they travel very well,

but the place i can never, ever find the knitting tools i need

is in my little workroom.

so i squealed a little squeal,

gave renee a big ol’ hug and then got down to the business

of spring cleaning my desk drawers

(i’m not the only one who has the urge to clean

when given gifts, am i?…oh well).

turns out that my spiffy new tin fits exactly right

in the top desk drawer.IMG_0046cropthis happens to be exactly the right place for it to fit

since i’m often at my desk when i don’t have

the little tool i need.

so handy.

now maybe someday,

i’ll get to be the featured designer on a set of

the sexy knitter’s tins, right?

a girl’s got to dream.

transfixed

after taking pics of two new patterns

(you’ll get to see them soon)

my friend wendy and i drove around a bit

just to see

whatever could be seen.

we found a little park neither of us knew existed

parked the car, and took a walk into the birdsong filled air

under the trees.

i tend to get drawn into the fine details of things

like leaves

IMG_0026urb83and water bubbles

IMG_0031urb83and moss on the north side of the trees.

IMG_0039urb83when i finally got around to looking up to get my bearings,

my jaw dropped

because there was this.

IMG_0022urb83it’s less than ten minutes by car from my house,

the very house i grew up in,

and i never knew

wow.
