combos

when i am cold

i feel the most motivated

to knit something for myself.

the other night, feeling quite chilly,

i ran into holly priestley‘s ‘nomadic night’s slouch’.

ooh, i love how much personality this hat has

and how much room it gives

each of us individual

knitters to

express ourselves in color and yarn combinations.

in true antiestablishmentarian style, nomad yarns collagei chose three different yarns altogether.

it’s a big ol’ hat, so matching up exact gauge is optional, right?

i almost never would think that,

but in this case

i did and it’s working.

holly’s version is much more colorful than mine,

which in a different mood i might have wanted,IMG_8710upbut right now, all the neutrals and mixed textures sing to me

of varied experiences and how they’ve

shaped me, made me

who i am.

i have worked through the corrugated rib,

and found the colorwork chart to be fabulously simple.

nothing like clarity to make a project feel like it’s flying off the needles!

if i juggle things right today (ie: get the necessary stuff done),

i could have my ‘nomad’ ready

before the storm hits

tomorrow afternoon.

that’s my goal.  we’ll see if i hit it.

cey & i: blog tour, day eight

check out the moth heaven blog

for today’s tour stop.

funny,

i hadn’t told julia

the inspiration behind

the front detail of forte, she figured it out on her own

and she was spot on.

fact is, that all the patterns in ‘artistic differences’

are named after musical terms or

sound related words.

‘forte’ is the only full word that i used, the others are all shortened.

this way the reference is in there, but the origin doesn’t hit you over the head.AD-6754_medium2

i like things that you have to think about a little.

can you tell just by looking,

what the other patterns

names are shortened forms of:

terva, trume, chroma, silve (this one is a bit of a stretch, i admit),

setto, imp, cade, osci (having to do with sound waves)

and last, but not least, tensity?

have fun guessing

and have a good day. we’ll talk tomorrow.

cey & i: the shoot (part 2)

friday has flown by at a furiously fast pace.

filled to the gills with, well, stuff.

but, my head is still swirling with images and memoriesIMG_6579cropfrom the hours spent below ground level

in cambridge’s club passim

along side (among others) hayleigh and

the talented lesley.

it takes

so much prep

and touching up

to make it all look natural and (ironically) effortless.

cey & i: the shoot (part 1)

i headed into cambridge early tuesday

planning to take pictures,

lots of pictures,

but, there’s work to be done at a photo shoot.

decisions must be made, outfits organized, hair consulted on, scenes decided upon.

so in the end, i didn’t take many pictures at all.

the few i did take, i’m going to share.

ready?

first up, the man behind the camera at work.

i did have to blur lindsay out a bit so as to not give too much away,IMG_6576crop

but the model in front of the camera was really working it, too.

it’ll be a few weeks until i get to see the final results.

what mike showed me in miniature that day

on his little camera screen

was awesome.

i couldn’t be more excited about

how this collection is coming together right before my eyes.

cey & i: experiment gone good

this was originally a swatch.

then i forgot how i did the swatch

(because i brazenly thought in the moment

that i was knitting it, that i would never forget how i did it).

then i dissected the swatch and wrote down how it was done in the first place.IMG_5695crop

now it’s one of the pieces in ‘artistic differences’

to be released later (i know, i’m a tease).

but, it you will see it later

(i promise)

and when you do, i hope you think the same things that i did

when i first stumbled over how to make it happen.

“oh.” … “hmmm.” … “wow.” … “cool.”

cey & i: out of reach

today, the knitting mocks me.

i can reach out and touch it, but the

actual knitting of it is shoved back hour by hour

because i am nearly buried under a mountain of forms.

camp physicals and permission slips and end of the year teacher notes,

state renewals and tax forms and more camp applications.

never have i felt quite so strongly as i do today

that what i need most as a mother of 4

and a self-employed designer

is a good secretary.

for the record,

my experience and job skills,

would not qualify me for the job.  ha.

and irregardless pages that remain undone, the knitting hour is almost upon us.

IMG_5380truth is, the paperwork will be just as important tomorrow

as it feels right now.  also, if i have to fill out one more ’emergency contact’

section before i get a good night’s sleep

the good secretaries at the camps

are likely to scratch their heads a bit when

they read that my kids have ‘people’ like mickey mouse,

batman and wonder woman for emergency contacts.

where, by the way, is wonder woman these days?

i sure could use her help…
