mountain meadow wool

in jr high,

at the end of lunch in the school cafeteria,

they sold creamsicles from a little ice cream cart.

on hot days, the line of kids waiting to buy

would wrap most of the day around

the big, old room.

when i first saw this yarn,

i picked out ‘natural cream color’ and ‘tesa orange’

because together they make up a creamsicle.

such yummy memories come to mind…

i was just going to

knit up a little two color swatch

in mountain meadow wool‘s alpine dk,

take a few photos, and put together this post.

honestly. that was all.

but this 3ply merino dk felt so great in my hands,

with its just right light twist and

such fine stitch definition,

that before the swatch was even completely dry,

i’d planned out a new hat, cast on, and was working my way through the brim.

ha. guess my plans went a bit awry.

but i’m really going to enjoy the cozy of this merino when fall comes.

i wonder if wearing it will give me dreams

of creamsicles dancing

in my head?

note: now for just a little of the nitty-gritty.

i was given these skeins from mountain meadow wool to review,

but, you all know me, and

a couple of free skeins of beautiful yarn

isn’t ever going to make me say i like what i don’t.

i’m much too stubborn and pig-headed for things like that…

Save

the reveal

late this past winter,

string theory yarn company

asked if i would design with dream in color’s ‘canyon’ for a mystery kal.

i jumped at the chance. what fun!

i knew that i wanted to

design a hat, but how to keep it a mystery?

i mean once you start knitting in the round on size 16″ circulars…

a hat is everyone’s first guess, right?

but earlier this winter

i had knit up a super warm, oversized braided hat

(the ‘nomadic nights slouch’ by holly priestley)

her construction was such that you knit the brim flat

and then joined in the round.

that might be enough of a novelty

to throw people off track in guessing ‘hat’,

and ‘tohutohu‘ was born.

the mystery kal has just ended, so now:

tohutohu hat collagei chose really mildly contrasting colors,

but some of the other knitters picked things that really pop!

i’ll collect some of their pretty photos soon

to make a collage for you to ooh and ahh over.

i love seeing what color combos

other knitters knit.

don’t you?

transformation

oh, how i love it

when things like this

(my very hastily and poorly sketched out idea of colorwork on a sleeve):IMG_9146briturn into things like this:10410290_10100171656970027_5694256389859965537_nthe actual colors of this lorna’s laces yarn

have to remain under wraps until tnna in may,

but i can tell you that it’s lovely and certainly something

that if i was at all skilled at dying

(which i am not)

i would have chosen to dye up for my very own.

contrasted

they say that

taking a black & white photo

will give you a good idea of whether

the yarns you’re considering will ‘pop’ enough

when you mix them together for colorwork, or not so much.

above is my shot at knowing.

4 worsted wt yarns (thanks in the loop!)

set in the southern sun of my kitchen windows.

now you’ve seen what i’ve seen, so what would you mix together?

and

do you want

to try to guess what the actual colors are?

i’ll give you a hint.  the darkest one is actually true black…
