enter to win, or don’t?

seriously, is that even a question?

it’s a luxurious yarn, a free copy of a new pattern and some other little goodies

of course you should enter.

i’ve just released a new pattern knit up in

galler yarns’ heather prime alpaca.

this stuff is amazingly soft

and there’s enough in

just one skein to

to knit this.

‘this’ being valleys of the sea

a rectangular wrap with wave like edging

along the right and left edges as it’s knit end to end.

really now,

does it get any better

than high altitude alpaca

(‘the cashmere of alpacas’)

that you can contentedly

knit an entire wrap in

out of a single

600 yard

skein?

did i mention that this means

no yarn ends to weave precariously into the lace pattern?

leave a comment to this post saying

which galler yarn you would most like to try and why

on or before saturday, december 8th.

i’ll choose 5 winners by rng.

(one for each skein shown)

winners will be announced on monday, december 10th.

check back this week for posts on my fav galler yarns,

and which one i so very badly want to work with next.

‘valleys of the sea’ taken from 22:16 of 2nd samuel.

the search is on

pull on your capes

(ala: sherlock holmes),

find the characters from children’s literature

behind the name of each pattern in

more knitting in the sun for kids‘, and win an autographed copy.

the official info is here.  the book behind vashti is ’round about here.

to inspire and motivate you to be diligent on your search

check out m. of dakine knits‘ wonderful striped

interpretation of my a-line hooded top.

this is one of my favorite things

about knitting, the

individuality…

‘search’ taken from 1:33 in deuteronomy.

just right and then some

my 5 yr old son likes to ‘read’ to his little sister and he does a very nice job of it

getting the gist of the stories without actually reciting word for word,

but there are some books that he will carry to me, crestfallen,

saying, “mama, i can’t remember what this page is about”

with tears hanging at the corners of his dear eyes

that break my heart into sad little pieces.

this never happens to him with joanna and eric johnson‘s books.

in freddie’s blanket they have once again found the perfect balance

between her sweet, memorable story lines and his richly detailed drawings.

not only do they tell a good story,

but at my house

they also plant seeds that are

the beginnings

of beautiful

family

conversations.

while reading

freddie’s blanket,

it came to light that

i swaddled them

each in blankets,

though theirs

were “not

nearly as cool”, they informed me, nor as cleverly shaped as the  ‘baby envelope’.

it also surfaced,

among other things,

that their uncle ken

was quite prone

as a young child

to sleep in odd spots,

just like freddie does

throughout the book.

as i was looking for my own copy

just this morning,

i found it in the hands

of my 4 yr old girl

as she sat quietly

‘reading’ to her baby brother.

after telling the story on page 2, she points and says,

“papa rocked me in a cradle when i was a baby like you”,

when she came to page 15,

“your hands have to be this (holding up her hand for size)

for mama to let you hold her guitar all by yourself”,

and “i think this beetle plays the trumpet just like our big sister” at page 25.

right near the very end, she leaned up close to him and said quite solemnly,

“when you are as old as me you will sleep in a big boy bed like freddie, too”.

then she ‘read’ through the patterns at the end of the book

with awe in her voice saying, “patteren.  patteren…”

as she turned each page

and i thought to myself, this is

the kind of book we need more of.

want one of your own?

leave a comment on this post

saying which of the book’s patterns

(pictured above) is your very, very favorite.

i’ll draw a name randomly on monday, the 16th.

‘morning’ taken from 5:3 in the psalms.

by the numbers

ok, so my kids don’t ‘paint by number’.

the times we’ve tried, they swap all the colors

-intentionally-

so their art looks nothing like the box.

i suppose that i’ve encouraged this

by my own example

as i’m not one to follow a pattern or

a set of directions to the letter.

my mum and i are notorious

for going shopping, only to return

with the ‘perfect’ thing.

‘perfect’, that is, once

the sleeves are reworked,

the hem narrowed and shortened,

and the collar removed to rebuild the neckline.

so i guess i come by it naturally, too.

all that to say,

one of my favorite things about creating a pattern

is to see each knitter making it her (or his) own.

changing the length,

adding a second yarn for texture,

or personalizing a mouse’s sweet ears.

my huge congrats to lisa (karmaperdiem)

who won her own copy of moses

and the upcycled yarn to knit him (or her)

from carol over at taddiebeeknitting.

i can’t wait to see who your little mouse turns out to be…

‘example’ taken from 13:15 in john.

ready to travel

little moses is having a grand adventure.

his pattern (w/ the lovely taddiebeeknitting yarn to make him)

is packed into 50 of the january phat fiber boxes.

at 9am cst and 6pm cst today, 200 boxes will be sold

and in a few days unpacked by the happy buyers.

get a couple of sneak peaks

of the things moses’ pattern will be snuggled in with here.

(thanks to amy of out of step dyeworks.)

fear not, if you aren’t able to scoop up a box

and have a hankering to knit a little cheese loving mousey.

check out carol’s contest to win the pattern and enough

upcycled luxury yarn to knit one of your own.

you have until tuesday to enter.

awfully good stuff.

have fun.

‘peaks’ taken from 95:4 in the psalms.

you win (& i win, too!)

congratulations to ‘amy v’.  you’ve won!

(according to the random number generator)

you are the winner of a year’s subscription to knitcircus magazine.

and runner’s up ‘wordcobbler’ and ‘knittaroo’

will receive a copy of the winter issue

in their inboxes real soon.

thanks for playing!

now for the ‘i win’ part.

i recently got picked to test knit

heidi kirramier‘s latest sweater pattern.

i have oft admired the clean lines and funk of

her mostly stockinette sweaters.

being chosen is just the shove

i needed to actually knit one.

i’m using knit picks shine sport

in ‘lady slipper’ to knit it up in

and am spending tonight

working through her twist on an i-cord cast on.

i am having such fun!

‘lines’ taken from 17:23 in first samuel.

wanna win this time?

i’m not sure i knew before this that you can subscribe to knitcircus.

you sign up and then the full collections are sent when the issues are released.

how cool is that?

don’t cha just love it?

and jaala has generously allowed me

a full subscription

(starting with the recently released winter issue)

to giveaway w/2 extra copies for runner’s up.

can i hear a woo-hoo?

here’s how we’ll play:

just leave your comment

saying, “my favorite knit circus pattern is _______”.

i’ll choose 1 grand prize winner and 2 runner’s up on monday, november 22nd.

you’ll have the new patterns just in time for thanksgiving day knitting.

and knitting counts

as post-turkey

exercise,

right?

ok, that’s it for me today.

you have until midnight (est)

on sunday, november twenty-first.

feel free to commence with commenting…

‘time’ taken from 29:7 in genesis.

glimpse

here’s my morning

the blocking pins

to some other

childhood emergency.

clear packing tape

that mama

didn’t put up

quite high enough

after sealing up ashley’s

wool of the andes prize box.

and here her blog gets quoted, ‘mamahood is never dull’.  so true.

‘quoted’ taken from 4:7 in hebrews.

it’s electric

i got the prize box of wool of the andes out to take this pic:

and once i had the skeins out

my kids took over.

they had been pretending to vacuum

and discovered that they could

pull the retractable cord

way, way out.

i had kiboshed the idea

of them plugging it into the wall alone

so they got creative on me.

begs for a caption, doesn’t it?

something like

“get plugged in at knit picks”

and i’ll tell you,

the box didn’t rev up

the vacuum and clean house,

but it made me smile.

knit picks always

does.

so,

back to

the winner.

congratulations

to ‘ashley, unscripted‘.

very soon a box (sans holes)

will be on it’s way to you and your needles.

enjoy it!

and for those of you longing to win

who didn’t get to this time,

keep your eyes peeled.

i’ll be announcing

the very next

contest

this wednesday afternoon (11/17).

it’s another fun one to be sure.
