beyond the bases

in this recent interview for the final issue of petite purls,

i was asked what my favorite game to play with my kids was.

honestly, with 4 kids whose ages span 11 yrs, when we all play together

i mostly play referee.

but, i described the game my kids

would have said at the time was their favorite.

now after mixing turkey and cousins over the thanksgiving day weekend,

(& remembering the sombreros from a birthday dinner with our friend diana last spring)

they have a new favorite: ‘sombrero ball’.

IMG_2447cropthis is sheer ‘laugh until you pee yourself’ madness.

1 point if you run round the 4 bases to get home.

100 points if you catch the wiffle ball in the brim of your hat.

(still counts for points if one of the other players

intentionally throws the ball into your hat),

and did i mention that you can be ‘detained’ by

bear hugs or straight out tackling

while other players search for the ball in the woods?

also note that wearing a sombrero in the late afternoon sun can lead to dancing

(see my 14 yr old in the outfield rockin’ just a little bit).

this is my family

for which i am very thankful.

we’re silly, but smart.  talented, but quirky.

and i wouldn’t want it any other way.
