double take

this is

my 6 yr old’s take

on my latest design.

he tells me

the person he drew

is singing (as in caroling),

not screaming as it appears.

i think perhaps is is me

wearing the look of shock

that covered my face

when i found that

spud and chloe had

renamed this scarf after me.

such a total surprise!

their pretty model

looks much happier

to be wearing the real thing.

happy and warm

for it is cold out there,

but really,

nobody said

grabbing a new year

by the horns

was for the faint of heart.

so look out 2012,

we’re here!

the opposite of being undecided

today knitcircus released their winter 2011 issue.

sold as part of that collection is my ‘duplicity’.

inspired by the stark branches of winter as

they set against the cool midday sky,

i wanted it to be a clutch

but it balked

and became a reversible buttoned cowl instead.

it’s double knit so that there are no strands to be carried across

the long stretches of color.

this also allows the mc and cc

to swap places on opposite sides.

i was thrilled for the opportunity

to try classic elite yarn’s

eco-friendly yarn

‘woodland’.

it’s softness

was a surprise

since it’s partly made

of nettles, but soft and fairly silky it is.

the wool takes dye differently

than the nettle fibers do,

so the yarn has a way of looking solid & heathery at the very same time

…already my mind is racing to work out the details

of the next project i will knit in this fiber

whose nettles belie it’s smoothness.

now, there’s some duplicity for you.

and the prize goes to…

lindsey!  yeah! enjoy your 13 new patterns from the knitcircus’ “gifts 2011” issue.

lindsey‘s correct guess was a bag.

i am always in search of just the perfect bag.

this one doesn’t have pockets,

which can be a deal breaker for me

but, it’s very strong, roomy & comfortable on your shoulder.

it’s two layers knit in the round, one at a time,

and then sewn together at the top edges.

the colorwork is intarsia, the end result is purely functional fun.

and now you know the rest of the story.

(can’t you just hear the npr voice in your head?

although the name of the man who made the byline famous escapes me…)

merciful‘ was released

by knit picks

yesterday.

i love this bag.

i carry the original

rendition of it

with me often.

my youngest daughter came earlier than expected.

so much earlier in fact that, although i knew i wanted to knit something special for her,

something all her own,

i still had no idea

what that would be

when we brought her home.

after a while i decided on a babette blanket as i’m a huge fan of graphics for babies.

i replaced all the edges with ‘circus peanut’ orange to make the middles really pop.

she spent many, many hours playing on this blanket

learning to both roll over

and to crawl on it.

such memories.

as i am want to do

i originally misjudged

just how much

blue sky alpaca dyed cotton

i would need to finish it.

but, i have learned that i am bad at this.

now i always buy more than i think i need

so as not to get caught short.

in this case i went overboard with my estimates

and wound up with almost 2 full skeins (of 6 different colors) leftover.

‘merciful’ was the result of figuring out just what to do with all that gorgeous yarn.

it’s knit in the round

all in one piece

(except for the i-cord straps)

including an inner knit lining,

this bag is much easier to make

than it looks like it might be.

what seems to be colorwork

is really just two strands

of two different solid colored yarns

(wool of the andes worsted)

mixing and mingling to it’s heart’s content.

happy yarn is always a good thing in my book.  smile.

knit picks was generous,

as they tend to be,

so they sent me the extra yarn

to make up three

different color combinations.

choosing 6 colors

to knit up into 12 color combinations

can get a little tricky,

i was really thankful to be able

to work these out ahead of time.

(my guy just walked by and knew the answer to the question – as he always does,

“who said this at the end of his every broadcast?”.

“paul harvey”.)

beautiful

don’t let the herringbone pattern or the size 2 needles scare you off.

this choker knits up fast.

and the herringbone is only a two row repeat.

perspective

'stretching ...

… the line’

so my loosey goosey method of storing yarn has led to this.  and i like it.  the smooth and even  rows of the cloudlike burly spun contrasts so interestingly with the mercurial personality of the aquarella.

today it feels a bit like life:  the organized bits crammed right up against the ducks that refuse to stay all neatly in a row.  praiseworthy actions tucked closer than sardines in a can to the urges that should be resisted.  so like my life.

this is knit in one long flat strip and then sewn up at the edges.  it keeps the stripes from having that changing colors blurp that can happen knitting stripes in the round.  with stitches this big the sewing up is easy.  you just thread your tapestry needle through the end stitch of each row being sure to keep the color changes lined up when you come to them.

today my mind is a deepish well.  so one more ‘like life’ idea.  the stripes here are thin on one end and thick on the other, so depending on your vantage point the look really changes.

funny how the same conversation can be heard

to mean two almost completely opposite things

by two different friends or such.

funny like hmmm …

(not ha-ha).
